With a nod to “A Universe of Stories,” the theme of MidPointe Library’s current “Summer Reading Program,” we ask today’s Space-related TriviaTuesday question:

Today, July 9, marks the 63rd birthday of esteemed actor/movie producer Tom Hanks. Which real-life Astronaut and his wife appeared along with Hanks in the 1995 movie, “Apollo 13”?

Answer:

Astronaut James Lovell, who in reality commanded the ill-fated Apollo 13 space mission in April 1970, appeared in the 1995 dramatic film, “Apollo 13.” Lovell’s wife, Marilyn, also had a part in the movie. *

Directed by Ron Howard,* the nail-biter captures the danger that confronted Apollo 13 astronauts after an oxygen tank onboard their spacecraft exploded during flight. It also captures the superhuman efforts of Earthbound Mission Control to return the trio home safely. **

The world drew a sigh of relief on April 17, 1970, when the crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near the island of Samoa.**

Interestingly, Lovell did not portray himself in the film. That was the job of Hanks. *

Instead, Lovell played the part of the captain of the ship, the USS Iwo Jima, * which in reality had plucked him and fellow astronauts John Swigert and Fred Haise, as well as the Apollo 13 command module, from ocean waters. **

Lovell’s wife was cast as one of the spectators who watched the launch of the Apollo 13 spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center, Florida. In the movie, she was portrayed by actress Kathleen Quinlan. *

Tom Hanks’s interest in Space doesn’t end with “Apollo 13.”

According to the website of the National Space Society*** :

“Hanks, who would have liked to have been an astronaut, portrayed astronaut Jim Lovell in the critically acclaimed film Apollo 13 (1995), which received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

“Hanks’ fascination with space exploration led him to co-produce one of the largest television productions of all time: From the Earth to the Moon, a 12-part HBO mini-series that charted the birth and early growth of the space program. The series won both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for best miniseries in 1998.

“Hanks is also the narrator, co-writer and co-producer of the IMAX film Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon in 3D (2005).

“On April 27, 2000, Tom Hanks received the NASA Public Service Award for his commitment to increasing the public’s interest in space.”

Perhaps the greatest tribute Hanks could have received was a piece of Space itself:

“Asteroid 12818 Tomhanks has been named for him.”
