#TriviaTuesday - A Madison High Homecoming History Question

It’s TriviaTuesday and Homecoming Season! Let’s celebrate this week’s debut of Madison High School yearbooks (beginning year 1961) on MidPointe Library’s Digital Archives by asking the following:

Q:  Who was crowned Madison High Homecoming Queen in 1961? Who was her escort?

Madison Trivia 5.jpg

A: Margaret Tyra was crowned 1961 Madison High Homecoming Queen. Her escort was Jerry Hutchens. (*) Senior Class President Harold Knepshield had the honor of crowning the Queen.

Margaret was one of five candidates for the royal title. They included Mary Whiteman, Diana Tipton, Carolyn Egelston and Gail Apple.

Photographs of all the candidates, the queen and her escort and homecoming festivities appeared in the following year’s “Tomahawk” yearbook (1962 edition, below).

1961 homecoming festivities included a football matchup between Madison and Lakota preceded by a pep band, snake dance and bonfire pep rally.
