#TBT - Parades
With Thanksgiving comes turkey, pumpkin pie, and parades. While we can’t provide you with turkey or pumpkin pie, we can provide some looks parades from the past!
Up first is one of the most unique events in Middletown’s history – the Miami and Erie Canal Closing Parade. Held on November 2, 1929, the parade marked the official closing of the Miami and Erie Canal in Middletown, though it had not been used for many years prior.
Next up is 1946’s “I Am An American Day” parade. I Am An American Day was held the third Sunday of May from 1940 to 1952. By the late 1940s the day was promoted and celebrated across the United States. In 1952, “I Am An American Day” was renamed to “Citizenship Day” and moved to September 17. The celebration is known as Constitution Day.
To round out our tour, we end with the Middletown’s All America City parade of 1958, which was held to celebrate Middletown’s All America City status.
