#TBT - Sorg Opera House
The Sorg Opera House opened in the Commercial Building on September 12, 1891. Since then, it been a cultural staple and iconic beacon in Middletown History.
The theater was named after its benefactor, Paul J. Sorg and Jennie Sorg, who originally arranged the programs. Live entertainment of all types was performed on its stage, and the stage was often used for civic programs, such as high school graduations. It played host to such stars as Francis X. Bushman, Sophie Tucker, Fannie Brice, Eddie Cantor, and many other vaudeville stars. After 1918, movies were presented at the Sorg, along with the traditional vaudeville acts. In 1929, vaudeville died with the advent of talking pictures
In 1947, after a major remodeling program, the building became the home of the Colonial Theatre. In 1984, the Colonial Theatre closed. In 2017, the theater was restored and reopened as the Sorg Opera House - https://www.sorgoperahouse.org/.
