IN THIS PACKAGE

  • 31 thin paper strips (3/4” x 11”)

  • 1 scrapbook paper (12” x 12”)

YOU SUPPLY

  • Scissors

  • Pen/Pencil

DIRECTIONS

Origami Box

  1. Start with your square scrapbook paper. Color side of the paper should face down.

  2. Fold it in half, then open it back up and fold it in half the other way.’

  3. Fold all the corners to the center.

  4. Fold one edge to the center, open it back up, do the same to all the wedges.

  5. Make 4 cuts into the square: two on one side and two on the opposite side. STOP cutting at the dots.

  6. Pull out the two triangles.

  7. Lift up the remaining sides to start to form the box.

  8. Last step is to secure the box, but you will wrap the triangle pieces over and into the box.

Origami Stars

  1. Begin with one of the strips of paper and write a positive quote, new year’s resolution, or affirmation on the white side of the paper (if there is one). Ex. “Say yes to new adventures.”

  2. To start folding your star, begin with the color side up this time.

  3. Bring the right end of the paper over and down.

  4. Bring the bottom end up and over the left end (looks like a cancer ribbon at this stage).

  5. Now that you have a loop, feed the top end behind and through the hole.

  6. Continue to pull the end through the loop, also gently pull the bottom end to tighten the knot.

  7. Keep wiggling and pulling the knot tighter, flattening it at the same time.

  8. The end of the paper strip on the left should be much longer than the end on the right. Try to keep that short and fold the excess end behind. You do not need to cut it off.

  9. Fold the end on the left behind, keeping the bottom edge aligned with the bottom edge of the shape in the center.

  10. Continue wrapping the pentagon. Fold the strip on top, over to the top left.

  11. Again wrapping the pentagon, fold the strip down behind to the bottom.

  12. Fold the strip up and over to the right.

  13. Fold the strip over behind to the left and continue until you only have a small section left.

  14. If your strip is just a bit too long to tuck in, cut it or tear it off before you insert the end of the strip inside the pocket.

  15. Now inflate the star. Use your index finger and thumb to pinch in one of the points of the star.

  16. Rotate the star and gently do the same on all of the points.

  17. You can get different results by pinching more or less at this stage. NOTE: Your first attempt at making an origami star may not come out as well as expected but keep practicing creating the points.

  18. Continue to write and fold the other strips of paper at your leisure and place them inside your origami box. Each day in January, you can choose a star to flatten between your fingers, unfold, and read your message.
